This is a message from our County Commissioner about the well know topic of COVID-19,please take a moment to read this.
There have been a number of questions over the last few days around Coronavirus and what we should be doing within Scouting. Following Tim Kidd’s recent email and update from the government, I wanted to reiterate the advice and provide some additional clarification. Firstly, we must follow the governments advice on managing the risk and keeping up to date on developments. The Government’s Coronavirus (COVID-19) webpage is frequently updated as things develop, so please check it regularly at www.gov.uk/coronavirus This situation will continue to develop quickly and we are very aware that parents and volunteers are feeling anxious about how fast and widely the effects of this will be felt.
It is extremely important that we respond in a calm and considered way. Therefore, like elsewhere, our members should follow the suggested advice on self-isolation.
Please also monitor the situation in your local area and liaise with your DC. We are not being asked to stop Scout meetings at this time, however, any decision to meet needs to have the full support of leaders – and if they are unhappy to meet or have concerns they should postpone meetings. For example – if you have a local school closed as a result of Coronavirus risk, then it may be appropriate to postpone/stop Scout meetings, activities & events in the same area.
We are holding an online District Commissioners meeting this evening, where additional events will be discussed – so please await further local announcements shortly from your DCs.
Following a meeting with the County Leadership Team yesterday and after much consideration, we have decided to postpone all Buckinghamshire County Scout Events for the next 2 calendar months. This does mean that the County Awards Presentation, Queens Scouts Awards Dinner, Water Activities Weekend for Scouts and Explorers and all Bucks provided Leader training will be postponed. Further details and revised dates will be provided when possible.
County Executive and management meetings will continue to run, however for the next 2 months they will be hosted online rather than face to face.
Taking current government guidelines into account, if you have an upcoming event and are unsure whether to go ahead, please discuss initially with your GSL or your DC.
We are monitoring information from the organisers of other large events, such as Gilwell 24 and the European Jamboree and may have to make a call on these events in due course.
County Office will continue to be open as usual, however, it will be closed to visitors from today until further notice.
In light of this changing situation, we have been inundated with queries, emails and phone calls. We request that you keep following government guidelines and local trends and please only contact us with urgent queries, anything non urgent is being triaged so please expect a delay in response time.
Finally, please remember throughout all challenges and adversity we are Scouts. If you feel it appropriate, without taking any risks, you may wish to help out those vulnerable members of the community.
Please keep up the Scouting spirit.
As for the 16th Scout Group, we will remain open until otherwise notified by the government or Scouts HQ.
If your child/ren is unwell, even just a little bit, please do not attend the meetings and let your leader know as soon as possible. This is to protect everyone and others within the group.
